rocks-1061540_1280Is there something you desire that you can’t seem to possess?

Of course there is.

Don’t be deceived, especially by yourself.

Everyone longs.  Longing is mostly passive, though. It reminds me of a secret. You wish for something but are contented with the wishing alone. The act of wishing becomes the thing itself. This is where glamour comes from. The illusion of grace, of peace, of ease and cessation of desire. It is not the thing but the idea of the thing and what that represents to you and others. Longing keeps this alive. It’s a song on repeat.

We long for time already passed. We long for people no longer present. We long for a version of ourselves we’ll finally accept. We long for things and places and feelings.

Think about that thing you desire. Is it attainable? Are you sure? Often the thing we pursue turns out not to be a thing at all when we finally stand before it. If it is yours to hold, what prevents you from holding it? Longing for it isn’t much better than not. In fact, it could be worse. Longing has a way of pacifying.

Be careful not to long yourself into a romantic and tortured slumber. A dream dreamt isn’t the same as a dream fulfilled.
