Love exists only in your mind. Or, so it’s been asserted, by a brilliant writer posing as a beagle named Indiana. Nevertheless, it’s a quite real thing most agree. Courage and commitment, similarly. At first I tipped my hat in agreement. Upon further deliberation, I think a case could be made that love, and therefor courage and commitment, isn’t limited so.
As I exist in part through my children (for example), love exists as a child of every loving thought that’s born unto us through action.
I’ll say it differently.
Though the feeling you have when you experience love for someone isn’t tangible, it often inspires an action that is.
I’ll say it differentlier.
Love can’t be contained.
I get that it’s an idea in a way. All I’m saying is that in a way it’s more. Yes, it lives in your mind. Perhaps a better characterization is that it’s born in your mind. Or, if it exists in your mind, it also exists beyond your mind in the workshop where ideas travel to become real boys.
There are lots of not-real things that provoke very real responses. Symbols that cast their magic on us. It’s incredible what our minds will accept without scrutiny.
Love is the most powerful magic of all.
It exists in the mother’s cradled arms.
It exists in the glance that says, “I understand.”
It exists in every, “I forgive you.”
Which is why I suppose I prefer a broad definition.
Not surprising.
I like when others are included.
The broader the better.
If it truly begins in our head, we’ve got enough space to spare.
