It’s the associations that intrigue me. The essence that’s become as much a part of the object as the object itself.
Who made it?
Who bought it?
Who owned it?
What did they do in its presence?
What conversations has this patient little fly on the wall enjoyed?
How many lives has it already lived by the time it finds its way to me?
Old things seem more real to me.
It could be their history.
Or their salt and pepper hair.
Maybe their crow’s feet appeal to me.
More likely it’s their perseverance.
It’s almost a type of wisdom.
Old things connect us to those that came before.
Some things, not necessarily old, aren’t actually things. Some things are ideas. I happen to think all ideas are old. We’re just too young to see it most of the time. (Thinking all ideas are old is actually an old idea.)
The thing about old things (ideas, too) is that they can be the answer as well as a trap. They can be the lesson learned that opens a path. They can be the anchor resisting your future.
Fun, isn’t it?
So what intrigues you?
