Ever think about how you don’t feel your clothes when you’re wearing them? You do when you first put them on, that sensation of change. But shortly after you stop feeling them. It’s something to do with nerve endings being compressed when you put the clothes on. The initial pressure causes them to fire. The sustained pressure prevents them from firing again which is why you can’t “feel” them after you first put them on. When you take them off the same thing happens in reverse which is why you feel naked but only for a little bit.
Imagine going about your entire day aware of fabric touching your skin. You’d never get anything done. I can’t prove that but still it seems like a major distraction. It makes me think of when something new is introduced into your life. At first it seems so evident and present but slowly you compress it right into normality. I think this can be both not-so-good and good.
It’s good when a new thing that presents as initially stressful becomes part of your routine. Like when you’re asked to do something new or to do something a new way. At first it’s hard and feels so until you figure it out and make it part of your normal. If you were to take it away you’d feel like something was missing.
It’s not-so-good when you get hung up on the new sensation and fail to compress it. This is also common when you’re asked to do something new or to do something a new way. It’s especially true when that new thing is especially challenging. If it persists you can find yourself with a preoccupation with this new addition to your wardrobe. You can start asking yourself whose idea it was to expand your wardrobe in the first place? Do you really need another turtle neck? Maybe you can just stop wearing clothes altogether. It worked for that emperor.
Duking it out with your tie-die v-neck is absurd. So is fighting the very thing that’s bound to honor you down the road. Consider accepting it as a gift that you must learn to find room for in the closet of your life. You’ll never know when you’ll have just the right occasion to sport it.
For now, you’ve got important things to do. You don’t have time to be aware of your trousers.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go organize my dresser.
