Nickelback

What if you were the eleventh best-selling musical act for an entire decade?

What if you were nominated for 78 awards? (And won 36 of them.)

You’d also be lucky enough to be the most hated band in 2014.

There is no such thing as good.

Good? To whom? You? Maybe. To me? No way.

Even the best-selling books on Amazon have 1- and 2- star reviews.

How come one critic’s voice carries further than 28 praises?

When we published our book – Listen to Your Laundry – in January we had a bunch of 4- and 5- star reviews. Seriously. Then we got a 2-star review and it hurt our feelings. Erik was pretty torn up about it. He almost gave it all up to become a nun. I had to caress the back of his head to make him feel better and I think I should stop now.

Maybe you should be more like Nickelback.

I like Nickelback because I don’t think they care what anyone else thinks about them. They just create their art and share it and let other people decide if they like it or not. It’s awesome.

But I can’t stand their music.

Anything you create will always be both bad and good.

So stop letting that prevent you from starting.

A little more about CJ Maurer...

I love firm handshakes and Indian food. Sometimes I take too long to tell a story. Recently I started reading a poem a day. I always mean well. Soon I'll make Lindsay my wife.
